Photometric vs radar launch monitors
The two ways a launch monitor reads your shot decide how much space it needs indoors. Here's the difference in plain terms — and which suits your room.

How each one works
Radar (Doppler): sits behind the ball and tracks it through the air, measuring flight to derive speed, launch and spin. Because it watches the ball travel, it likes a little distance behind the ball and toward the screen.
Photometric (camera): sits beside the ball and takes high-speed images of the ball and clubface at impact, calculating the numbers from that moment. It needs almost no flight distance, which makes it the natural fit for shallow indoor rooms.
What it means for your room
| Photometric | Radar | |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Beside the ball | Behind the ball |
| Depth needed | Minimal | More (reads flight) |
| Best room | Tight / shallow indoors | Deeper rooms, outdoors |
| Ceiling mount? | No | No |
| Examples | Bushnell Launch Pro, Foresight | Garmin R10, Mevo+ |
| Both | SkyTrak+ (photometric + radar) | |
Which should you pick?
- Shallow room (under ~13 ft deep): favour photometric beside the ball for the most consistent indoor data.
- Comfortable depth (16 ft+): either works; radar units like the R10/Mevo+ are great value.
- Want one that does both: the SkyTrak+ combines the two and is the default home pick.
Accuracy isn't strictly "photometric vs radar" — top units of both types are excellent. Space and budget usually decide it for a home build.

FAQ
- Is photometric or radar better for an indoor simulator?
- Photometric is usually the easier indoor fit (sits beside the ball, minimal depth). Radar prefers more depth and excels in deeper rooms and outdoors.
- Why does radar need more space?
- It measures the ball in flight, so it needs distance behind and in front of the ball. Photometric reads impact from beside the ball.
- Which units are which?
- Radar: Garmin R10, Mevo+. Photometric: Bushnell Launch Pro, Foresight. SkyTrak+ does both.
